Air travelers have had to drastically change how they pack liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bags.

On August 10, 2006 a terrorist plot to blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S. was intercepted. Immediately, U. S. Homeland Security restricted any type of liquid, gel or aerosol from traveling in-cabin on any flight. Restrictions were eventually loosened to the regulated sizes we know today, which still greatly affect which and how many hair care products can be taken on board.

Current Regulations

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority reports specific security measures for carry-on baggage that is consistent with other worldwide transportation authorities. The restrictions state:

  • the items are packaged in containers with a capacity of 100 ml / 100 grams (3.4 oz) or less
  • the containers fit comfortably in one clear, closed and resealable plastic bag
  • the plastic bag has a capacity of no more than 1 litre (1 quart)
  • the approximate dimensions of a one litre/quart bag are 15.24 cm by 22.86 cm (6 in. by 9 in.) or20 cm by 17.5 cm (8 in. by 7 in.)
  • one bag per passenger will be permitted

Hair care products fall into the Makeup and Toiletry category of items permitted in carry-on luggage, but they must meet the size requirements. Typical products include aerosol bottles and cans (hairspray), styling gels and creams, liquid detanglers and straighteners, shampoos, and conditioners.

New Options to Meet Carry-On Restrictions

Many manufacturers have produced travel sizes for years for the sheer ease of packing smaller containers instead of full-size bottles and dispensers. The variety had been limited or exceeded container maximums until August 2006. Since then, hair care manufacturers have responded to the changes in world-wide travel by creating many more products in airline-friendly sizes, and have opened up distribution of salon sample-sizes for retail purchase.

The one-litre plastic bag permitted per traveler must house all carry-on liquids, gels and aerosols—not just hair care products. This includes makeup, food, perfumes and mouthwash as examples.

Suggested Hair Products to Maximize Limited Space

To maximize the most out of the one-litre bag, here are some suggestions of airline-friendly professional products that come in sizes even smaller than the traditional travel size:

  • Shampoo & Conditioner: Rusk Coral Therapy 74 ml/2.5 oz
  • Anti-frizz Product/Thermal Protectant: Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum 0.85 ml/0.03 oz
  • Styling Product: Hempz Spray Gel 59 ml/2 oz
  • Finishing Spray: Sebastian Shaper or Shaper+ 48 ml/1.5 oz

Nioxin Research Laboratories, that specializes in products for thinning hair, is one of the first hair care companies to produce an all-in-one travel pack that not only provides shampoo, conditioner, styling product and finishing product in airline friendly sizes, but the items also come its own transparent resealable bag that velcros in and out of a larger travel case.

Before travelling, double check the carry-on regulations for the country of origin and the country of arrival.
